20's Plenty for Faversham

At 20mph, EVERYBODY benefits...

Fewer casualties: Road safety statistics show that 20% of pedestrians hit by a car travelling at 30mph will die, whereas only 3% hit by a car travelling at 20mph will die. A 1mph reduction in speed reduces road casualties by an average of 6%. This is based on data measured in Portsmouth, which had 22% fewer casualties after 20mph limits had been in place for two years.

More walking & cycling, less traffic congestion: In Bristol, introducing 20mph limits resulted in walking trips increasing by 20%, whilst Edinburgh saw an increase in cycling and walking and fewer car journeys.

Good for the environment: Driving at 20mph can produce fewer emissions and help to make traffic flow more smoothly.

Good for local businesses: An environment that encourages more walking and cycling will attract more tourists and more shoppers.

Cost effective: 20mph limits pay for themselves within 12 months because of the reduction in casualties.

Limited impact on drivers: Reducing your speed by 1mph would slow a journey across town by only 15 seconds. But with congestion as it is, there probably won’t be any increase in your journey time with 20mph limits.
